Extreme Body Modification

Body modification or alteration is the deliberate altering of the human physical anatomy or appearance. Body modification can be anything: a pierced ear, a 3D tattoo, a breast implant or even eyeball coloring. This is done in an attempt to look different and meet the desire of the host. It is done in order to look fetish or achieve a fantasy. These days, lots of people have a form of soft body modification as tattoos and piercing of the tongue in a fashionable way. It goes extreme when the piercings and body alterations goes really wild and weird.

This is where things really gets spooky. You look at someone who is heavily ‘deformed’ (no disrespect, just the best word I could use) and the only thing that comes to mind is the ‘why?’. It is done for motivation and sexual enhancement, affiliation to a group, trust and loyalty, shock value and self expression.

For these guys, anywhere is 'pierce-able' and 'tattoo-able'. They bear it around with pride, self esteem and fulfilment. They have passion for it. The truth still remains that body modification is a universal art that has been practiced for thousands of years. It can be traced back to have originated from Asia, Africa and South America over 4,000 years ago. It was also done in Tlingit of South East Alaska to denote the status of children. The more piercing a child had, the higher ranking he or she would be. In ancient times, adults hold rituals and elevate youths from boys to men, at which stage, they must go through tough body piercing tests to be able to get recognized as a ‘man’ in the community they belong.

Heavy earrings are used as beauty symbol to stretch the ear lobes. This has been practised in China and is still done in Borneo today.

Nose piercing can be traced to some part of Africa who above others desire status and power.
